My 2.5 year old son is hitting at preschool (unprovoked) he hits both my wife and I and don't know wht to do?

We do not and he was an angel of a child from birth to two years old. Is this a phase? How do we discipline? When he kicks my wife, I want to grab him and put the fear of daddy into him but I know this is not right.
