What is the hole thing about seeding with Torrent day?

ok so i download torrents; so does a hole other heap of people, but i am recently new to seeders and leechers. i have read alot of articles about them but still do not clearly see the point. if answered please answer in depth so my blonde mind learns something. Also a relevent question if you use torrent day; how do you make your ratio higher?
