What if plants do perceive pain, but not in the sense of pain that we feel?

we know that plants do not use a neural circuitry to detect pain, but what if they suffer via some other means that has not been revealed to us, yet? Our knowledge of this world is limited, so how can some of us claim to be dead certain that plants do not "feel"? are we justified in making these umptions about the unknown?
